I looked at Heil mics and a number of amplifier / equalizer
combinations but have ended up using a Logitech 350 USB headset that
was bought for $31 at Office Depot. The connection to the PowerSDR console is
done
with VAC. The physical hookup is absolutely painless, just plug the
headphone into a USB port on the PC. The earphones are a little
"cheesy." They certainly don't meet the David Clark standard and require an
adjustment period.

About three weeks ago I had my first 75 M
AM QSO in thirty plus years with the SDR-1000 and the USB headset. The
guy on the other end was using a Johnson "boat anchor" with a D-104. He said
the audio sounded great. It is doubtful that
my audio is as good as can be generated, but I have to believe it is
more than adequate for normal AM or SSB.

And, it works well on TeamSpeak.

Almost any mic will work and now the Heil Yaesu cable works also. Or you can
plug a pro mic directly into the balance Line in, add a little EQ and you'll
sound grate. No more MIC problems.

Subject: [Flexradio] What about microphones and the Flex 5000?

I had some minor difficulties hooking up microphones to the Flex 1000.
Many people here did a variety of things to make their favorite 'mike'
work.

I was wondering if something had been done to make the hookup of the
various microphones of the world easier and more flexible (or, has this
problem already been solved when I wasn't looking).

I've been basically off SSB for over a year. Back when I last cared,
people were deploying solutions like the Behringer external amplifier and
so on. There were some mods to the software, too, but I never got the
impression it was as easy as "wiring it up" and maybe checking a level,
and off you go.

In brief, it always seemed like an area where I had to know way more than
I did compared to, say, plugging in a CW key (which, even way back when,
was always effective for me by simply hooking up my key to the "key"
plug). I guess I'm looking for something as simple as I get on other
rigs. Are we there yet?

Everything else seems wonderfully improved, by the way, especially the
things I have been talking about / asking about all this while. The 5000A
seems very much like what I had in mind, in fact. Well done indeed. My
only minor beef would be that I would have preferred USB, but the
rationale for the Fireware interface seems very straightforward and I'm
all for minimal headaches with latency and who needs complicated packet
management anyway? It just means I have to get me an option card to
replace the D44, I guess. Hardly the end of the world as I'd probably
sell the D44 with the SDR 1000 (it's probable that I'll sell my 1000 when
I get my pennies gathered for the 5000).
