Bill,

Unless you need to interface a piece of hardware that accepts a serial
interface, you really shouldn't have to use anything other than the virtual
COM ports.  The reason most ham apps have COM port interfaces is because for
most radios, this is the only interface (hardware COM port).

Because our radio is already connected to the PC, this hardware interface is
unnecessary.  But we offer the CAT software (thanks to volunteers) to
interface to existing software easily via virtual ports.

Note that you can wire up your CW paddles to a serial plug and use a
hardware port for minimally more reliable CW performance.  This doesn't seem
to make as much difference in the latest software however because of the
improvements made to the keying.
