I replaced the brand-name Adaptec FireConnect 4300 card with Agere chip (as recommended by Flex people) by an el-cheapo, no-name FireWire card with VIA chip (criticized by Flex people as being inferior) from the local independent computer store and so far have experienced no spontaneous disconnects in several hours of jumping around from one band to another
Google turned up many complaints about this particular Adaptec card (which has appeared in at least three versions -- but same model no. -- using different chips) from people who had found it unsatisfactory for capturing digital video from their camcorders. I'd have bought a PCI-Express card if they'd had one. They had PCI-Express USB cards but no PCI-Express FireWire.
