This has always been a bit confusing. In my case, I routinely set the
radio to 7040 exactly so that the signal from the XG1 is centered on the
red line. I set the level in the setup dialog to -73dBm and hit
calibrate. This seems to give the desired result even though the peak
of the signal is not centered within the shaded filter bandpass area on
the screen. When calibration has finished and I change frequency
slightly so that the signal peak IS within the filter bandpass, I see
the correct level of -73dBm on the s-meter.

This sounds correct to me. You may want to verify that the calibration is
actually finding the signal by watching for the "mountain" while the test is
running and make sure that it ends up somewhere near the middle of the
screen (i.e. within the filter).

My problem of very hi floor noise turned out to be a bad case of level
calibration. Iam asking for some info about the calibration procedure. Iam
using a elecraft XG-1 which was calibrated to a HP gen.
?? The manual says
?set the gen to a signal of? -73db but no less than -30db above the noise
floor.?? The XG-1 according to the manual has the output fixed at -73 db at
7040.000 khz.?
the flex manual says send this signal to the rig so it is in the center of
the filter pass band then enter the frequency and signal level ,which in
this case is is 7.039000 with the signal in the pass band of the filter and
the level would be the -73db as specked by the xg-1 as output level?
Correct?
???? I entered the 7.03900 and the -73db numbers into the level calb page
and hit the start button. When finished the noise floor went back to s1?? it
was at s8 all the time.
?????? Is this the correct way to do this calibration,if not please point
out what I did not do correctly.
thanks for any help on this.
