I agree that the SDR1000 is very nice out of the box for AM. I used the FA-66 module and a reasonably priced condenser mike with the EQ in the SDR software and got really great audio reports.
I have the Flex 5000A now. To get the same outstanding audio reports I had to bypass the SDR EQ/processor software and use the Line in on the back setup as described by Tim and others several weeks ago on this reflector. I fed the same condenser mike I used on the SDR1000 to a Behringer VX2000 and then to the Flex line in. Soon I will be adding an Orban broadcast processor to increase the density a bit. This from a group of folks with all sorts of expensive microphones (one guy had a Neumann TLM 103, for example) and long complicated processor chains of EQs and such. A couple of things that were PARTICULARLY nice were the result of being able to SEE the other folks signals: (a) Seeing them made it was very easy to center-up on them, (b) Seeing them allowed me to know how wide each person had their bandwidth set -- THAT was an education in itself. So, if a recommendation from a totally inexperienced AM'er is of any use... there you have it. I really enjoyed AM...
