You do not need a mic preamp to use the balanced line-in; the PR-781 will work
fine without one, but you will probably have to have the mixer and mic input
gain turned up towards the upper end of the settings to get enough signal to
drive the phone input to 0 dB.

I have a PR-40 and it worked fine without a mic preamp, but I chose to use one
so that I had a bit more "headroom" for the AF input and it also utilizes a
tube amplifier stage so it has a "warmer" sound. So using a mic preamp is
mostly a personal preference thing.

Subject: Re: [Flexradio] F5K balanced line-in -vs- front mic connector

Reading the 5K doc it suggest using a mic preamp when using this connection
- so will I need a preamp with the PR-781? Also wondering if not having the
20db preamp via the front mic connector will be a problem? Thanks.

1/4" TRS jack to connect to audio processing equipment supplying balanced audio
(+4dBμ max), such as a microphone preamplifier or (chain of) equalizers,
compressor/limiters, aural exciters and other effects processors. This jack can
be used instead of the Microphone connector on the front panel.
However, unlike the front panel Microphone connector, there is no 20dB preamp
in line. The Pin-Out is shown in Table 6 below. Balanced Line Input input
impedance is >50 k Ohms.
