As an early adopter of computer technology, I was running my own PC With ham radio apps before IBM and Microsoft even got into the business.

You REALLY don't want to go back to the days when each hardware manufacturer had his own little weird OS and apps had to be written differently for each machine on the market (before CP/M). Gee - I can't even remember how many of them there were, but the early computer mags (in the mid-late '70's) will illustrate what I am talking about.

When IBM came in with Bill's OS (never mind where Bill got it - it doesn't matter anymore) and stabilized the market, this was the best thing that ever happened to personal computing IMO. The public apparently agrees - PCs have maybe 80 - 90% of the market now?

Gates was a good businessman as well as a clever software designer. I think most of the people who trash him and his company just got here late.

Well, they are in business to make a profit so they have to somehow! I
actually think the Evil Empire is much less evil these days and I am a
Microsoft Partner (I could never afford to install so many different
machines with all these operating systems if I wasn't!). For all the good
Bill and Melinda Gates are doing to the world, he was a terror on the
business front.
