'snugness of fit' ?  as long as it stays in position, i dont think it matters...
and the inverse square law goes with radiated signals, in the 'ether', 
notconducted ones, on cables, which act like transmission lines...

It is important.  The effectiveness of the impedance provided by the ferrite is 
determined by how close the material is to the electromagnetic field (the 
common mode currents) that is magnetizing the ferrite material.  I suspect that 
the inverse square law would be applicable in this case, so twice as far away 
is 4 times less effective.
