What the other two excellent posts didn't say is this: Most digital modes are created by audio fed to the transceiver in some scheme. It isn't normally the job of the transceiver to interpret it during reception, audio is received and fed to a separate program for decoding. Likewise transmission: audio is encoded by a separate program and fed to the transceiver. Now en/decoding COULD be done by the transceiver or its control program, but when you consider the number of digital modes and how frequently their popularity changes or are invented, it becomes obvious that this function should (and is) be offloaded onto a separate program.
For that to become obvious, just look at all the operating modes covered by FLDigi. (it's free, btw) and still there are some new modes that aren't covered. FLDigi operates by decoding audio. See how many different schemes there are? The timing is perfect to wish everyone who is an established Flexer, to those gathering information before Flexing their wallets, plastic or lines of credit, a very Flexible New Year and and a prosperous run of QSOs. Coming from a background of digital mode communications, and an growing interest in QRP, the Flex-1500 seemed to be the perfect fit for me. I will be able to pursue WAS QRP on all bands, and switch to the digital modes for a change of pace, still in a QRP setting. I guess I have missed the method of implementation of the digital modes. Does the PowerSDR software generate the digital modes of operation or is it similar to operating HRD in the background with DM-780 doing the actual digital programs? I've got a lot to learn, and need to glean an enormous amount of information from available sources in a relatively short period of time. ==================== de Bob WA7HYD [email protected] ==================== _______________________________________________ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List [email protected] http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/ _______________________________________________ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List [email protected] http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
