Yes, that is correct.  Apparently, you had MultiRX turned on.  Turn it off &
you can do it.

The problem is that in order for MultiRX to work, both frequencies must be
visible in the Panadapter at the same time.  So, if you have a wide split
set up & then turn on MultiRX, the VFO B frequency changes to a frequency
within the range of the Panadapter.

If you think about it for a bit, it is logical that this must be the case.
The bandwidth of the RX datastream (& therefore the Panadapter) is limited
by the sample rate.  In order to listen to 2 frequencies at once, they BOTH
have to be within the bandwidth of the datastream.
