Hello Brad,

I've monitored the rf envelope of the FLEX-5000 with an oscilloscope, and in my opinion, the keying envelope shape is textbook perfect. The FlexRadio has got to be the most polite radio being manufactured today, when it comes to clean keying. You probably are aware that you can change the rise/fall times, though the default 5mS seems exactly right to me.

As for the timing of the elements, they are very accurate, and if you use Mode B, you'll also have the ability, via the Setup > DSP > Keyer panel, to select "Mode B Strict" and "Strict Char Space" which helps the sender to maintain proper spacing between characters.

I agree that the internal keyers of some current production transceivers, including several that have a very good reputation for cw, are lacking when it comes to properly spaced characters, and proper weighting. The FLEX-5000 is definitely not in that camp!

I have read that many modern HF rigs will not put out properly weighted and spaced CW with their internal keyers. And that the waveform of the keyer output does not look very pretty - or sound pretty. How does the keyer in my Flex 5000a compare? It sounds good to me, but I don't have an oscilloscope to see the output waveform.

Is there a way to key the sidetone without transmitting, thus making my 5000a the world's most expensive code practice oscillator?
