Sorry if this has been hashed over before...I am anticipating purchasing a 3000 for maritime mobile installation. I do understand FCC regulations about using a ham rig on commercial frequencies. That is not my intent or desire, however, having the ability to utilize frequencies outside of the ham bands during extreme emergencies is desirable in the radio I purchase. A simple answer is requested--is it a software or hardware issue--or both? Or something else? We just want the capability to use an HF rig on standard marine SSB or data frequencies in the event of an emergency. We're not interested in a marine rig that can do ham--we need something transportable--a computer can always be found to operate the rig(well, almost always...) Our next option would be something like one the small Yaesu rigs that might be easily modifiable for marine HF and VHF requencies. Again, just to have the ability to use other frequencies for emergincies.
Thanks for any help...
