The balanced input is LINE level, not MIC level, so you may be able to drive itwithout out an external preamp is you set the mixer and mic gains all near the max.

Personally, I would not generate additional gain from the software DSP (mic boost), but would use a microphone preamp and use its line level output to drive the FLEX-5000. For best SNR, you want all of the required gain to come from the first gain "stage" in the AF signal path. The little Behringer mixers are cheap. http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/UB502.aspx

Fellow flexers...

On the Flex 5000a is it normal to need "Mic Boost" (selected from Audio
menu) to in order use a balanced mic such as a Shure SM58?
I could not generate enough audio level without activating "mic boost" with
my Shure.

Yet using a standard Yaesu fist mic in the front panel socket does not need
Mic Boost...

Is this to be expected?

Thanks
