Ken, I have never experienced this problem. I use CWX all the time, although I admit never in as intense an environment as Field Day.

I've had the same problems as you with using the predefined messages, works great for a while then boom, goes off on one and often find I have to either restart PSDR or reboot the PC to fix it, this is with a Flex3000.
