I've seen periodic pauses on my system, linux, KDE, so it's not a Windows thing. I haven't tried to track down the source of the pauses yet, but I think it's either tile-related or ephemeris-related. I run FG from the KDE desktop, using the Konsole console emulator. It could be that the writing to stdout causes a big cascade of GUI calls in KDE, so I'll try running FG without the GUI and see if anything changes.
