3D instruments (which seem to be the prefered state of the art method)
are always visible unless specifically selected out by an animation. In
a properly made airplane model you should be able to reaad the guages
from just outside the cockpit. At farther distances they are usually
culled out by a LOD animation. So really it's just a question of where
you put your instrument and your viewpoint.
