I found the reason for this. It was the gears z-coordinate not being
negative. Shifted them to -0.1 fixed this issue. I've updated the
tarball at:

http://www.sol2500.net/flightgear/jeep.tar.gz

and added a little eyecandy selectable by the "Extras" Menu
