There is an alternative, sometimes.  If the plug isn't completely dead
but just misfiring a lot, you can often clear the lead by doing a
high-power, lean ground run for about 5 minutes.  Rental planes are
especially prone to lead fouling, because a lot of people taxi them
around with the mixture set to full rich.
