This is now committed (simgear/scene/models/particles.[ch]xx) and all aircraft in CVS are adapted. Please report any problems. It's easily possible that I made a mistake somewhere, though I tried all concerned aircraft. Also note that I fixed some wrong tag names and suddenly parameters will be respected that were just ignored before.
