Of course, simgear needs alut.h so the above statemens are plain wrong. 
Maybe the simgear package can provide declarations for the alut 
functionality it uses (at least for macusers)?

Still on OSX10.6, currently the simplest workaround is to install 
freealut from 
http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/Forms/AllItems.aspx
