Well, the cause is pretty simple: As far as I was told there was no
plan to support WMS in Atlas, therefore I didn't spend any time on
this.  Today I got my feet wet by building a set of Atlas map imagery,
just in order to see if and how it works.  Actually it worked better
than expected, but there's still some work left - most notably to get
the various tiles geo-referenced.

As far as I understood Yves, he/we will be able to provide such feature
quite soon.

This image shows a transparent map tile containing the tarmac at EDLN
in its upper right corner, thus your assumption about lon/lat seems to
be within range.
