Well, the cause is pretty simple: As far as I was told there was no plan to support WMS in Atlas, therefore I didn't spend any time on this. Today I got my feet wet by building a set of Atlas map imagery, just in order to see if and how it works. This image shows a transparent map tile containing the tarmac at EDLN in its upper right corner, thus your assumption about lon/lat seems to be within range.
