CH has changed the electronics over time. I have been able to
identify three different incarnations from people's comments:

1. A very old one, which reports a dummy fourth axis and a dummy
button -- I think Alex Perry has this one. It should work out of
   the box.

2. A less old one, which doesn't report a dummy button or axis, and
thus requires the joydev.c patch (the current Linux joydev.c refuses
to recognize any joystick without buttons). I think Tony Peden has
   this one.

3. The newest one, which doesn't report a dummy button or axis and
also uses new electronics. This one requires both the joydev.c
patch and the hid-core.c patch; note that the hid-core.c patch is
also required for the newest USB CH Pro Yoke (that's why Alex Perry
wrote it -- he has the newer electronics in his yoke).

Linux's joystick stuff is not very well maintained -- the guy at SUSE
who manages it tends to ignore patch submissions, and the Linux code
base changes only rarely. Oh well.

All the best,

David
