I've not used the ATI drivers myself, so forgive me if this is useless, but a quick look at the install instructions on their website suggest one must run "fglrx" as root in a terminal after the installation. Did you do that step? As Andy said, your other error message showed that you probably don't have suitable kernel sources or kernel headers installed.
