..posting to the list allows quicker and more accurate responses, we
have a lot of competent people to answer Knoppix and GNU/Linux
questions, so there is no need to wait out my sleep or bird flu recovery
etc. ;o)

..you run the _entire_ laptop from the Knoppix CD. If something looks
"scary" ;o), simply kill the power, pry out the CD and boot up and,
you're "safely" back to Wintendo. ;o)

..now, your prudence is warranted, even if Knoppix is a fair bit more
idiot proof than Wintendo, it is still possible to blow away all your
business on playing PHB, but that'll take you a wee bit of effort.

..ah, the perils of freedom and democracy: You decide, there's
even DE for German keyboards! ;o)

..yup, we usually choose a high speed mirror as close as possible.

..4.0.2 is a month old, chk the mirror dates and get 4.0.3,4,5 instead
if you see it. ASDL will do fine, Wintendos on ASDL is the preferred
cracker targets, I hear, so you may prefer use it to get the CD and then
use that to "wget -c" (details in "man wget") the DVD, to minimize your
exposure to da crackers, word is standard setup WintendoXP average
14 minutes online before they get cracked.

..I dunno how CD burning is done in Wintendo, but check
http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Downloading_FAQ

..you can actually boot up your laptop right off the iso image file,
which is quite handy if you wanna play with the DVD but only have a CD
player or less: get both the dvd and cd iso's, burn the CD iso onto a
CD, and use that to boot up the dvd image with a
"bootfrom:/dev/hda1/or/whereever/you/put/da/Knoppix-etc" appended to the
boot command, more details on such stunts in:
http://knoppix.net/wiki/Cheat_Codes

..I did mention F1, Del, Esc, F12 etc buttons to try hit on bootup?
Some boxes are even left open to boot right up from any bootable
CD or DVD.

..ah, hand holding is profitable because it's _very_ expensive, so RTFM
so you can use them to your advantage and de-limit your budget. ;o)
http://knoppix.net/ and http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Main_Page for
Knoppix specific stuff, and the FG-user list for FG stuff, several of
us use Knoppix and/or Debian to fly in FG.

..to speed up things, get some old box to play PHB on, such as screwing
around resizing the ntfs partition to make space for dual booting, I've
never lost data that way, but that does in no way mean you can't. ;o)

..and, do put Grub on your MBR, it's been years since I last touched
painful Lilo, it's _why_ other bootloaders exist. ;o)
