At the risk of teaching Granny... later marks of Lightning also carried hooks; one-shot devices for use on land _only_, for emergencies. Designed to catch RHAG and other arrestor devices in case of brake failure or whatever. As Vivian said, the Hunter is equipped with a hook for the same reason (and can be successfully landed on Nimitz), but has no launching gear. Yes, this is a slight drawback of the carrier at the moment. Still, as you've obviously discovered, Nimitz is a great addition to FG which has come a long way recently and the developers responsible deserve a pat on the back IMO...
