Hi Rod

I am having the same symptom and the problem could be the same.
My motherboard has an integrated ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP 1x/2x chip
with 4MB ram(Mach64 chipset.) I am also running XFree86 4.0.3 and
unfortunately there is no support for direct rendering(dri)
My glxinfo shows:
display: :0.0 screen:0
direct rendering: No <---- PROBLEM !?!?!?!
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2
........

There is currently work under way at
DRI(http://dri.sourceforge.net/home.phtml)
to get a Mach64 driver to work under latest XFree86 but if you are using
3.3.6
you should be able to go with Utah-GLX(http://utah-glx.sourceforge.net/)
