I use the nvidia driverand I have no problems except for the new joystick

hung-over from their Christmas drink, so you may have to wait for an
answer on this one. I haven't been following it that closely. I do
believe that FG-0.9.8 didn't have this problem.
I looked back through the list archives and found this that may help
you:

the root of the base package to something else. This will prevent
FlightGear from using high resolution textures and revert to low
resolution textures instead."
Maybe that will help?
Also, make sure you have the nvidia drivers installed from
nvidia.com. Can you run any other opengl software (at accelerated
rates) on your machine?
