Hello

I'd like to understand Flightgear's behaviour re sound; I have
alsa installed on a new Fedora Core 4 installation with CCRMA
real time patches and apps installed. My ~.openalrc reads:
(define devices '(alsa native sdl esd arts null))
which accords with fgfs' README.sound.
I have dmix enabled in my /etc/asound.conf; this is supposed
to enable software mixing .. indeed I can play many sound files
simultaneously from the command line with multiple invocations
of 'aplay'.

However, if I try to run fgfs, it crashes immediately because
the sound device is not available. This happens even when
 I use
   --disable-sound
in my fgfsrc. Here is the part of the backtrace:

 [New Thread -1347060816 (LWP 24842)]
open /dev/[sound/]dsp: Device or resource busy
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:818:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to create IPC shm instance

ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:818:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to create IPC shm instance

Why does fgfs try to access sound when --disable-sound is in effect ?

Should I expect openAL to be able to deal with a dmix enabled system ?

 Thanks polly
