Is this Linux?  I had issues with Debian kernels between 2.6.13 and
2.6.15.  2.6.17 works for me.

Try:
 hd /dev/input/js0

That should dump rows of data as you move the stick.  If it just dumps a
few lines and stalls you have the same problem I had...
