At the moment this feature is not implemented. Depending on your programming skills you may be able to implement this yourself. If that is not possible, you will have to make use of the exisitng zoom functionality which (as previously described) consists of x and X (shift-x) to zoom in and out respectively, and the mouse-look mode (right click twice from the arrow pointer to get the <-> pointer) or joystick hat to set the look direction. If you need help implementing your zoom-box idea, I am sure that there are people on this list and FlightGear-Devel who would be pleased to answer your questions.
