Typically this error would indicate a failing or deficiency in your opengl
drivers.  I run nvidia graphics hardware exclusively under linux and I
always go to nvidia.com and download and install their latest drivers.  If
you have some other graphics chipset, then your mileage may vary.  You might
want to try installing some other opengl based applications and test to see
if they work ok.
