I'm still trying to find something in Cisco release notes or documentation
which confirms Jeff's comment about native vs. hybrid mode.

Meanwhile, I did find the following link which has some specific comments
about nde on native IOS c6k platforms:

I'm in the process of setting this up for the first time under native IOS.
The same switch operated as expected in hybrid mode.
