Ian,

I tried configuring FLTK with --enable-quartz
and without --enable-quartz.  Those little artifacts
only show up when I have quartz enabled.

I tried the patch you mentioned in both cases, ie. quartz
enabled and disabled. In the case where quartz is enabled
and the artifacts are present, the patch made no difference.

So I think in the meantime I'm going to carry on with
quartz disabled in FLTK ... I was using it because
I thought Apple would be dropping any support for Quickdraw (if not already?)

Any chance of anybody on a mac confirming this? and
also enabling quartz and seeing if those artifacts are present? :)
