Hi all,
I feel I need to say a little about these complaints over attached midi
files and the use of HTML in e-mails:
Firstly, the file size of the midi attachments (each .mid file) was very
small, around 3k. If you want an idea of how big 3k is, each e-mail sent to
complain about the posting of these midi files was 1k (approx.). So three
complaints equals one midi file with a little music that someone may
enjoy....I know which I'd rather receive!
I'd be interested to know if other people feel strongly about this. I
thought that the first few files could be posted to the list just to
generate interest in taking part in this midi project. Also I felt that
others who weren't going to take part might like to hear what can be done
with midi, even though these are only test files.

I think you've missed the point here. The idea is to make this project open
to this list and encourage participation from this list. This is not
personal website material, this is experiment at a different way of working
together within a community (i.e. Fluxlist). These attachments are so small
that they will not cost you more in download time or indeed cause any
inconvenience and if you don't like them you can always delete them. Once
we've established a form for the midi project we can move to a website to
carry on what we're doing.

As for code, I don't use it and will not. Entering code is one way to get
a virus. It's silly to bother with virus protection if one simply picks up
and uses loose codee people pass back and forth on the net.<
The whole point of virus protection is that you can open anything you get
send as an attachment, or anything you download from the net. Then you scan
it and zap the viruses if there are any. If you have anti-virus software and
you're not downloading files you know nothing about then you're wasting your
money because that's what it's for.
Having said all this I guess it's time a I built a site to host our midi
experiments. I'll try and do it in the next few days. Until then I see no
reason not to send midi files via the list since the files are not actually
going to cause problems on anyone's system.
cheers,
Sol.
