I have a database with over 1000 records and want to view it as a list wi
th about 8 to the scrollable
window.

1. The answer's obvious: use list view!

However, I want to have a navigation panel running the FULL height of the
 WINDOW and located at
the LEFT of the window! That is, the left quarter of the window will have
 a series of buttons
arranged as a column running down the window; the right three-quarters wi
ll have 8 records
running down the window.

You might think of it as being similar to creating my own status area.

If I wanted to have the navigation panel at the top, there'd be no proble
m: I'd just use the header
and list view. So, is it possible to move the 'header' to the left of th
e screen? I have not seen
anything like this implemented. Has anyone seen or done it?

The solution might be similar to displaying a SINGLE graphic covering the
 entire background of a
list view but I have not seen this done either!

2. I can see a workaround using a portal.

I want to be able to: a) search the 1000+ records and return somewhere be
tween one and all of
them, and b) print the found set as a list. But this entails using global
 key fields, setting and
removing flags, &c. And making the navigation obvious will be quite a
 challenge!

So, ideally, I'm looking for a solution that doesn't use a portal. Is the
re any hope?

With thanks in anticipation.
