Checkbox troubles.. help

Hi

I have a field that is defined to use a value list that I want to use  
the check box format.  I defined this in the layout mode, but the  
check boxes only show up briefly when clicking in the blank are where  
they should be.  I'm using Filemaker 8 advanced.  Does anyone have a  
clue what may be happening?  Actually, I just tried the same thing in  
2 older versions of Filemaker with the same results, so it must be  
something I'm doing very WRONG.  Help Please!!
