carriage = line return in text export; vice-versa in import

hi, i just moved to FMP8.5 from 7 (mac) and am exporting data as .txt 
files (tab-separated text) to be sent as an email attachment (one 
email/attachment per record).  the data (composition programme notes) 
is contained in a single field for each record and has carriage 
returns that need to be retained (text to be edited by one person and 
translated by another).

this worked in v.7, but now the carriage returns appear as a strange 
character and the carriage returns aren't present anymore.  they seem 
to be converted to line returns (shift-return; i checked in MS word); 
i can understand the reasoning for this (carriage return = next 
record in importing), but need to find a solution that works better 
for my needs in this situation.

a partial solution might be to export as ".doc" and run a replace 
script on the MS word doc before editing (prefer to edit in word 
anyways), then another on the final version to change carriage 
returns to line returns.  but actually, i just tried to import a text 
with ONLY line returns (i.e. one paragraph), and filemaker interprets 
the line returns as carriage returns!

what to do?!
