Glad to hear you finally had some luck, Rowland, although it's a bit of a
stretch to suggest I pointed you in the right direction, as I was pointing
you backwards when you needed to look forwards.

And thank you for raising the level of intercourse here with a bit of Latin.

John - after much tedious testing (during which I found, inter alia,
that trying to use the v3 driver actually caused the v5 driver to
start working thereafter!) I eventually discovered that there is a
newer version (5.1.5) of the v5 driver now available than the one
that was installed on the Windows machine (5.1.4). I downloaded &
installed it and everything is now working as it was in the
beginning! The MySQL support site has lots of stories about the same
error 10061 but none of the things suggested as a fix on any of the
various threads made any difference to the symptoms.

If I'd looked more carefully at what was available in the way of
driver downloads after reading your post, I might have saved myself
some bother. Thanks for your response - you were certainly right that
a change of driver was needed! I guess I was just getting blinkered
because I thought I'd got the latest one installed.

regards

Rowland
