  Al - I know it's not a discussion forum, but About This Particular 
  Macintosh (ATPM) has been running an occasional series of FMP 
  articles that I think are suitable for entry-level folk.

  There's a good example in the current (November 2008) issue on text 
  calculations to increment version numbers.

  It's not an elegant way to implement version numbering (I'd have used 
  separate numerical fields and concatenated them) but that's not the 
  point - it shows off a lot of useful text-parsing and manipulation 
  techniques.

  You'll have to check the indexes to see which issues have FMP 
  articles in them. ATPM has archives of all previous issues.
