Why is it that I only see the fields that I have added to a portal (under a tab control) when the fields are actually populated?
How am I supposed to do data entry?

This must be a dumb question, but I have been having a lot of trouble with portals!
They don’t behave the way I expect!
So much for my expectations: life should have taught me that by now..

(1) Go to "Define Database" and select the "Relationships" tab.

(2) Let's say the layout in which the portal is displayed is associated with the table "Main", and the portal itself looks into another table called "Junior". On your E-R graph, you'll see a line leading from "Main" to "Junior", and there'll be a box in the middle of it, probably containing an "=" sign. Double-click on that box.

(3) In the dialog window that opens up, you'll see panes for both "Main" and "Junior". Down near the bottom of the "Junior" side, check the box next to "Allow creation of records in this table via this relationship".

(4) OK your way back out.

(5) When you return to your "Main" layout in Browse mode, you'll notice a new, largely empty line in your portal into "Junior", underneath any data-filled ones. That's where you can start typing to create new "Junior" records. As soon as you've finished entering new data there and press "Enter", a brand-new empty line will appear beneath it, awaiting your next new "Junior" record linked to this "Main" one.

(6) Good fortune.
