Why not have a field named, Status? Using the define values, list Non-Exempt, Exempt, Former (the former for those who passed away), then you can create a sort record, or find records on these criteria.

Can I retain their records in the "general membership" records for , say, newsletters, updated notices etc. When a member dies, I want to retain their records, but separate them from the "general membership' so that I don't send them ANYTHING, as the last thing I want to do is to add to the grief of their family.
