Discrete Records

I keep a database of club members. Some pay dues, some don't. As I'm a  
relative novice to FM Pro 10, is there a way to identify who is exempt  
dues? Can I retain their records in the "general membership" records  
for , say, newsletters, updated notices etc.
When a member dies, I want to retain their records, but separate them  
from the "general membership' so that I don't send them ANYTHING, as  
the last thing I want to do is to add to the grief of their family.
Any suggestions?
