Rewrite them as scripts. Use the Exit Script ( ) script step to return your final value.
I saw this idea in a video I saw recently. I think the author called it function-based scripting or something like that. I can't remember where I saw it right now, so if someone can attribute it, I'm sure the author would be grateful.
