Runtime file accessing network file

I am starting to develop a multi-user Filemaker solution. The main file 
will be hosted on an internet-based Filemaker server. Is it possible for 
a Filemaker runtime file to access the database on the server - by 
defining file references, etc., before converting it to a runtime file.

I know that a runtime file cannot be shared over a network, but I'm 
essentially trying to do it the other way around.
