The main thing that struck me when I read Richard's explanation (not "solution" I guess) was that I could probably turn this into a custom function so that it would be more versatile. I use a similar solution to capture the file names contained in a folder, then loop through each line (file name) and create data records with that file name. It was an easier "nut to crack" since I controlled the data and only needed to look for, and count, the hard returns. But seeing the logic broken down made me realize since I've done this twice now, but with different data sets, I could probably make a custom function for the structure and just plug in the fields and characters I'm looking for. In fact, the first thing I'll do is go to Brian Dunning's custom function page and see if it already exists!
