John, have you considered using a script trigger to format the field as the 
user types in the data? An example of how to do this may be found here:
   http://help.filemaker.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/7465
under the heading "Example of using a object script trigger". The example is 
for phone numbers, but the same techniques would work for you.
