Not you, but possibly the model. In this case there is no balance between 
the barotropic and baroclinic pressure gradients and you may get large 
initial currents. You should simply try this. The acceleration is over 
after some model hours or days. 

A way out could be, to diagnose an approximation for the sea level from 
the rigid lid surface pressure. Or you could calculate the vertically 
integrated baroclinic pressure gradient from your initial field. This 
requires a short look into the equations. Take to horizontal momentum 
equations, set all velocities to zero and ask for the sea level which 
balances the baroclinic pressure gradients.
