Dear mom4 community,

We have completed beta testing of mom4. Many thanks to those
providing input over the past 1.5 years. This critical work has
resolve a number of issues. New options and diagnostics have been
updated, and portability to various platforms has been tested.
Additionally, various bugs have been corrected (see below). Overall,
our tests indicate that the code is producing scientifically relevant
simulations. Nonetheless, experience has shown that nothing is
perfect, especially with the many varieties of computer platforms.
Hence, your continued input, support, and patience is most
appreciated.

This release version of mom4 is known as mom4p0a. The "a" suffix"
anticipates subsequent releases with bug fixes, new features, updates
for different platforms, etc. To access the code, please register in
Section 4 of the mom4 Web User Guide at

http://www.gfdl.noaa.gov/~fms/pubrel/j/mom4/doc/mom4_manual.html

Registration is required even if you previously registered as a
mom4-beta tester.

Here are two things to keep in mind.

1. The code is being released via a GForge system locally run at
GFDL. This system allows for CVS control of the code. Hence, you are
encouraged to access the code via cvs commands (see the mom4 web guide
for details). We also have tar-balls for those not wishing to use
cvs.

2. GForge provides software for bug tracking, support requests, etc.
We encourage folks to make use of this software. The mom4-email list
is maintained to broadcast announcements to the community, as well as
questions which are of a general nature. Registering at the above web
site automatically subscribes you to the mom4-email list. We strongly
request that users employ either the GForge software or the mom4-email
list. Allowing the mom4-queries to be addressed by the larger user
community helps educate all users, and broadens the level of support
far beyond that available from GFDL folks.

As with any project of this magnitude, there remain unresolved issues. Such drives the development of new models. MOM4 will nonetheless remain a key component of GFDL ocean climate research for years. We hope that you find it to be of use for your research as well.

Sincerely,
Stephen Griffies (for the MOM4 Team)

p.s. A nontrivial bug was introduced into the mom4-beta2 and mom4-beta3 versions in ocean_freesurf.F90. If "use_waterflux=.true.", contributions from surface fresh water forcing were incorrrectly omitted from the barotropic part of the time stepping for the surface height. This bug was not present in mom4-beta1. This bug has been corrected in the mom4p0a release.
