Consider ISA-based firewall appliance - see
http://www.isaserver.org/hardware/ISA-Appliances/ for product list and users'
opinions

Nowadays almost all appliances are stock-standard PCs with hard drives and all
that, running hardened OS. Checkpoint Secure Platform is Linux, and it converts
almost any standard server into Checkpoint "appliance". Those who ship
preconfigured appliances use Linux (i.e. Cyberguard SG series), BSD
derivatives, or Windows in case of ISA appliances. So there is no real
difference between "software" and "appliances".
