I am new to FOP and still have not entirely gotten past the learning curve Will is referring too.
But with the help of this mailing list, some online resources and an XSL-FO reference book I have successful in working FOP into one project, and have a second one nearing completion. So far the results have been very satisfactory. This is a very worth while tool to have in your IT tool box.
